CAMPS FOR KIDS

This started as an annual event on our calendar that aimed at evangelising and discipling children from Sweetwaters and giving them a holiday that they otherwise would not be able to experience! For most of these children and teens a  trip to the beach is a dream, however with help we can make it a reality. Camps seem to be a unique tool through which young lives are often touched and changed. These camps have been the catalsyst for so much of iThemba's work in Sweetwaters/Mpumuza.

Each camp involves taking approximately 50 children/teens between the ages of 9  - 11 or 12 - 17 on each camp. The camps are scheduled to take place on the South Coast of KwaZulu Natal at the Mercury Hibberdene Children’s Holiday Home. We have been blessed through a partnership with the campsite and the Mercury Newspaper to be able to run one of these camps at a much reduced rate at this fantastic site.

This camp has been an answer to prayer for Stu, whose dream has been to run camps for underprivileged children, after many years of running these camps for priviledged kids. iThemba Kids Camps in 2010, if funded successfully will mean that ten of these camps will have run over the past five years, touching around 400 children’s/teen's lives.

The children spend their time on camp playing games on the beach, learning more about the Bible and God, having small group discussions, doing crafts, swimming and much, much more! Many of the children also have the opportunity to deal with situations of abuse, neglect poverty...etc, in their lives, and the iThemba staff are in the position to follow up these situations after camp.

Each child also receives an item of clothing (eg. in July – a full tracksuit) – this year a local company called Milling Techniks has sponsored the tracksuits for iThemba Kids Camp in July.  We also try and purchase Bibles for the children who come on camp, who do not have Bibles.

It is a real ‘tear-jerker’ to see the faces of some of the children when they see the sea for the first time in their lives!
