When the statistics reveal that fewer than 1000 children in an area with approximately 5000 children under the formal school going age, are attending crèches or pre-schools, we are aware that something needs to change. Crèches and pre-schools in the Sweetwaters community provide a safe, nurturing environment for the children, as well as attending to some of their basic health and nutritional needs.
The “Little Feet” project is supported by a group of sponsors based in the UK, who are sponsoring pre-school children to attend school. They are doing this by paying the monthly school fees of these children. We are so grateful that as of this month 15 more children are fee-paying learners at three of the crèches we are involved in. 3 children have been sponsored to attend Sbukuseswe Crèche, 7 to attend St Raphaels Crèche, and 5 to attend KwaNomusa Crèche. There will soon be five more children supported to attend KwaNomusa Crèche.
The preschools that are receiving sponsored children are all part of iThemba's Asidlale program. This means that more children will be prepared properly for their grade 1 year. It also mean that there will be less children left to their own devices during the working week.
Below are some of the stories of these preschoolers who have been sponsored:
